Her skating career began in 1989, after she earned first place at the Skate America competition. Following a scandal in 1994, Tonya was forced to quit figure skating, and pursued boxing. Tonya made her debut by becoming a boxer, in 2003. The acclaim she received grew because she appeared in TV and film shows and made her a worldwide celebrity. What made her a national famous was however the 1994 moment when her primary rival Nancy Kerrigan was mysteriously attacked just before the 'National Championship.' Tonya used her fame and popularity in order to alter the narrative of women's figure skating. Her life story and achievements have been featured in a variety of tests and academic studies, while in the year 2017 a biopic titled 'I, Tonya' was released.
